MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy-drama that follows Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army Afghanistan veteran who finds herself alienated from her family by the arrival of her deceased best friend, Zoe (Natalie Morales). Despite the relentless efforts of her VA counselor (Morgan Freeman), the intense love of her mother (Gloria Reuben), and the indifference of an unexpected love interest, Merit’s cozy-dysfunctional friendship with Zoe insulates them both from the world. That is until Merit’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris) — staying at the family’s ancestral lake house — begins to lose his way and needs the one thing he refuses to do … help. At its core, this is a buddy movie about a complicated friendship, a divided family, and the complex ways we process grief.
